Clinical and Epidemiological Studies

Long-term cohort studies that monitor health trends,
and guide impactful public health decisions.

Pwani Research Centre conducts cohort studies to better understand the long-term patterns, causes, and impacts of diseases within communities. These studies help researchers track health outcomes over time and generate important evidence to guide prevention, treatment, and public health interventions.

Our research focuses on areas such as HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), reproductive health, and maternal and child health, particularly among populations at higher risk.

Ongoing Studies

Mombasa Cohort Study: A Prospective Study of HIV-1 and STIs in High-Risk Women (PI:McClelland)

A long-running study following women at high risk of HIV to better understand HIV infection, STI transmission, reproductive health, and pregnancy outcomes. The study has contributed significantly to global knowledge about early HIV infection and risk factors for transmission.

CXT Study: T-cell Activation and Exhaustion in the HIV-positive Female Genital Tract (PI:McClelland)

This study examines how HIV affects immune responses in the female genital tract and how these changes may influence infections, HPV, and cervical cancer risk.

Cessation Study: The impact of vaginal washing on cervical inflammation: A randomized controlled trial of women from sub Saharan Africa at high risk for HIV acquisition.

A randomized study investigating how vaginal washing affects cervical inflammation and HIV risk among women in Mombasa.
