Implementation Science
Transforming proven health interventions into
At Pwani Research Centre, we focus on how health interventions perform in real-world settings. Many health solutions are proven effective through research, but delivering them reliably within routine health services remains a critical challenge. Our implementation science studies examine how health programs are adopted, delivered, and improved within everyday healthcare systems, particularly in resource-constrained settings along the Kenyan coast. By working closely with county health departments, healthcare providers, and communities, we identify practical ways to strengthen service delivery and ensure that evidence-based interventions reach the people who need them most. The evidence generated through our studies informs service delivery improvements, strengthens health systems, and supports evidence-based decision-making at county and national levels.
Completed Studies
- Social Frailty Study
Examined how social vulnerability and community-level factors influence health outcomes and patterns of health service utilization. - CCS SAIA Study
Applied the Systems Analysis and Improvement Approach (SAIA), a structured method to identify service delivery gaps and test practical improvements, to strengthen cervical cancer screening services and improve service delivery processes within health facilities. - Fresh Stillbirth Study (FSB)
Evaluated facility-level practices and care pathways to identify strategies for reducing preventable stillbirths and strengthening maternal and newborn care.
Ongoing Study
- FP–HIV Scale Study
Uses the Systems Analysis and Improvement Approach (SAIA) to support the integration of HIV services within family planning clinics, enabling women accessing contraception services to receive HIV testing, prevention, and linkage to care within the same service point. - HEATED SAIA Study
Applies SAIA within Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments to identify service delivery gaps and strengthen HIV testing, linkage to care, and related services for patients seeking emergency care. - Real-World Syndromic Management of STI Study
Evaluates the effectiveness of syndromic management for sexually transmitted infections in routine clinical settings and identifies opportunities to improve implementation and patient outcomes. HEATED SAIA – Applying the SAIA model to strengthen HIV and related health services.
Real-World Syndromic Management of STIs – Evaluating how STI management works in routine clinical settings.
